How to Create Amazing HandsUp Leads with reFX Nexus2
If you are a fan of the energetic and uplifting genre of HandsUp, you might be wondering how to create those catchy and powerful lead sounds that dominate the dancefloor. Well, look no further than reFX Nexus2, the ultimate ROM synthesizer that offers a huge library of high-quality sounds for any style of music.
One of the best expansions for Nexus2 is HandsUp Leads Vol. 1, which features 128 presets designed by Tobias Meyer, a renowned producer and sound designer in the HandsUp scene. These presets range from classic to cutting-edge, covering all the bases for creating melodic and memorable leads that will make your tracks stand out.
In this article, we will show you how to use some of these presets to create your own HandsUp leads, and give you some tips and tricks to tweak them to your liking. Let's get started!
Step 1: Choose a Preset
The first step is to choose a preset from the HandsUp Leads Vol. 1 expansion that suits your track. You can browse through the categories by clicking on the arrows next to the preset name, or use the search function to find a specific sound. You can also use the shuffle button to randomly select a preset.
For this example, we will use the preset "LD - Dancefloor Killer", which is a powerful and punchy lead sound that works well for fast-paced tracks. You can hear how it sounds in the audio demo below:

Step 2: Adjust the Modulation
The next step is to adjust the modulation parameters of the preset to add some movement and variation to the sound. You can access these parameters by clicking on the Mod tab at the bottom of the Nexus2 interface.
Here you can see four modulation sources: LFO 1, LFO 2, Mod Envelope, and Mod Wheel. Each source can be assigned to different targets, such as pitch, filter, volume, pan, etc. You can also adjust the amount and shape of the modulation for each source.
For this example, we will use LFO 1 to modulate the pitch of the sound slightly, creating a subtle vibrato effect. To do this, we will set the target of LFO 1 to Pitch All, and set the amount to around 10%. We will also set the shape of LFO 1 to Sine, and set the rate to around 6 Hz.

Step 3: Adjust the Filter
The next step is to adjust the filter parameters of the preset to shape the tone and brightness of the sound. You can access these parameters by clicking on the Filter tab at the bottom of the Nexus2 interface.
Here you can see two filters: Filter A and Filter B. Each filter can be set to different types, such as low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, etc. You can also adjust the cutoff frequency, resonance, drive, and key tracking for each filter.
For this example, we will use Filter A to cut off some of the high frequencies of the sound, making it less harsh and more warm. To do this, we will set the type of Filter A to Lowpass 12 dB, and set the cutoff frequency to around 8 kHz. We will also increase the resonance slightly to around 10%, adding some character and emphasis to the filter.
